Bottled water drinkers usually don’t think about how the water they are drinking got into the bottle. The water in plastic bottles is usually just purified tap water- this includes both individual bottles and the giant plastic bottles from traditional water coolers. The water is purified at a factory, bottled and then shipped to its desired location. The plastic from the bottle often adds chemicals and bacteria to the drinking water, sometimes producing more contaminants than the average glass of tap water. The plastic in individual bottled water contains a chemical called phthalates, which is a product used to make the plastic softer. The same chemical can be found in shower curtains and cosmetics. It is possible for the chemicals inside the plastic to be spread into the drinking water, especially if exposed to high temperatures like the inside of a warm car or in a garage. Phthalates are endocrine disrupters and can affect the normal functioning of the body, especially when over exposed. Another chemical contained in plastic bottles is polyethylene terephthalate, or PET. PET is an oil derived plastic that produces 100 times the emissions of a glass bottle. Generally this chemical does not enter the water, however if the bottle is heated or exposed to high temperatures, a possible occurrence during shipping, the chemicals from the plastic can be released into the water. Although the risks of the chemicals are unknown, scientists are certain that ingesting the chemical components of plastic is harmful to our bodies. The chemical contaminants plastic adds to the drinking water is only one consequence of drinking bottled water, there are also several environmental reasons not to drink water stored in plastic bottles. The most apparent environmental toll plastic bottles present are the plastic bottles. One plastic bottle takes one thousand years to biodegrade when thrown into a trash bin, and nearly 75 percent of plastic bottles are thrown into landfills every year rather than being recycled. In 2006 the Container Recycling Institute estimated the recycling rate at a low 25 percent, meaning 3.5 million tons of PET produced plastic were thrown into landfills. The lack of recyclers is only one of the environmental tolls. The production of PET plastic wastes 72 billion gallons of water a year, in addition to the increased fossil fuel emissions used by PET petroleum factories each year. The shipping process of bottle water adds additional environmental tolls, further increasing fossil fuel emissions through the planes, trains, and trucks used to deliver bottles of water to markets, office buildings and homes. In addition to the many hazards of drinking from plastic bottles, they also present the problems of storing and disposing of the containers, lifting the heavy 45 pound 5 gallon bottles, and constantly paying for new bottles and arranging delivery times. So, how do you avoid all of these hazards and still get healthy and great tasting water? Lately several companies have been introducing bottle-less water coolers that can be installed into your existing waterline. A popular brand of water dispensers using bottle-less technology is Innowave Water Dispensers. These water filters are equipped with special UV lights that remove 99.99 percent of bacteria in the water, and because the dispenser is hooked into the existing water line there are no opportunities for germs, bacteria and viruses to enter the water between the filtration period and the time you drink the water. The filtration system uses carbon based filters that remove chlorine and other contaminants found in tap water. The use of carbon filters actually implements the process of reverse osmosis, eliminating 95 percent of dissolved solids and making the drinking water much healthier. The dispensers are made from stainless steel, eliminating any of the hazards mentioned above that can occur from plastic containers and plastic production. The stainless steel is coated with BioCote® antimicroibial technology that protects the surfaces of the water dispenser from microbial deterioration. The bottle-less water dispenser technology eliminates all of the hazards caused by drinking bottled water, and because of the unique filtration system the water is actually healthier. Other features of the systems include the ability to have hot, room temperature, or cold drinking water, and a 3 gallon storage tank useful in emergency situations when the power or waterlines are unavailable. In this modern age, we shouldn’t be drinking unhealthy or infected water, exposing ourselves to bacteria and viruses, or abusing the planet. We can do better and we have the technology. Bottle-less water dispensers solve all of our water problems. Total Corporate Solutions provides a selection of bottle-less water dispensers.
